Trafoi – skiing, easy to challenging
A resort which seems created with families in mind. Take off into this most family-friendly area in the entire Ortler Ski Arena starting directly in front of the hotel. The host and ski legend Gustav Thöni’s home village is situated at an altitude of 1,570 metres in the heart of the Stilfser-Joch National Park and offers plenty of winter sports activities for all ages and levels of ability. With 18 kilometres of downhill runs beginners and young children can effortlessly accomplish their first turns in powder snow. The practice lift is located directly in front of the hotel ‘Bella Vista’ and children find the descent easy as pie, while parents can watch from the sun terrace, or get on with enjoying the slopes on their own, secure in the knowledge that their offspring are in the best of hands. Among South Tyroleans who love skiing remote from the bustle of the more fashionable resorts, Trafoi is an insider’s tip. There is plenty to choose from, including the most challenging black runs and plenty of opportunities for adventurous back-country skiers.
Sulden – a ski resort to suit all abilities
Sulden is a mecca for Alpine skiers, with 40 kilometres of downhill runs ranging from easy to challenging at altitudes between 1,900 and 3,250 metres and King Ortler as a backdrop. Yet in spite of its popularity Sulden has lost none of its original charm. The area has become Reinhold Messner’s second home and boasts everything a winter sports enthusiasts could ask for: a fun park, a boarder cross and half pipe, well-prepared runs but plenty of attractions for back-country skiers, romantic log huts, vast expanses for show-shoeing hikes, through to ice climbing. Downtime waiting at ski lifts is rare and the world’s largest overhead cable car system (4 cars, each with a capacity of 110 passengers) will whisk you quickly and conveniently up to the fascinating world of “three-thousanders”.
Ortler Ski Arena – thrills of the slopes at 10,000 feet
Sun-drenched slopes, South Tyrol’s tallest summit as a backdrop and in spite of the sunshine there is a guarantee of ample snow cover from November until May. The Ortler Ski Arena is an association of 15 ski resorts located mainly in the west of South Tyrol, giving holidaymakers access to over 300 kilometres of downhill runs with just one single ski pass. And all beneath the unbelievably high summits of the Vinschgau valley system.
